United Reformed Church, Moorland Road, Burslem, Stoke on Trent. Ws-10444

Part funded by Burslem Townscape Heritage Initiative.

Replacement of railings and pedestrian gates at the church originally designed by the Staffordshire architect ‘A. R. Wood’ - (Absalom R. Wood 1851-1922) and built in 1905. Working with CTD architects http://www.ctdarchitects.co.uk/ and local heritage and conservation specialists, the ironwork at the front of the church has been re-instated as the original.

Like many buildings throughout England the gates and railings were removed during the war. Wood is known for other significant buildings within the potteries area and was also responsible for Tunstall Town Hall built in 1883-85 ; the Queen Victoria Jubilee Building of 1889; and the School of Art, Burslem 1908. After examining original ironwork still remaining around the town hall the style, sections used and manner of manufacture were decided for project.

Square holes were cut into the coping stones with the sections secured using lime mortar and stone dust.
